How to Leave your Comfort Zone and Develop as a Professional

After a period of time spent in any job, it can be easy to cling to what is secure and not develop further. That isn’t to say that you don’t have any drive, vigour and definition, but you may find yourself feeling a bit confused. When this happens it can be easy to default into doing what is comfortable and expected of you. But it could very well be time to step out of the career comfort zone.

However, comfort is not the end objective of any career path, nor is it the end of the road for those who find themselves in it. Growth, experience, learning, having a sense of accomplishment and work-life balance are truly the goals to aspire to. But in order to do so, we need to have the presence of mind to take the leap, have a career change and try something different.

The Psychology of the Comfort Zone

You may be the most proactive person under the sun, but yet there are moments in which you could fall prey to the comfort zone. But why is this? Well, that’s because the comfort zone is seductively comfortable. Here’s why:

Fear- Fear is the sense of paralysis and the cocoon that beguiles us and keeps us inactive in the pursuit of our dreams.
The Nurturing Cocoon of Familiarity- The comfort zone presents to us all the things that familiar and within our control.
The Illusion of Risk is minimised- When you choose to remain in the comfort zone, you somehow labour under the misconception that you are safe. Essentially you feel that if you did not take any action, you don’t run the risk of being upset or disappointed.

Stuck in a Job Going Nowhere?

This is a painful subject.  A lot of people feel that they are not progressing or feel unfulfilled. This often comes with a certain stigma that you are unable to cope or be adequate in some shape or form and to openly say so can have uncomfortable consequences.

However, having said that, there comes a moment when you know that you have to take a step back and reflect before embarking on a new career.

  • Are you doing a job that fulfils you?
  • Do you feel like you are progressing in your job?
  • Is there a specific growth path for you?

After you take some time to unpack your thoughts and feelings about this, there comes a time when you will need to take a decision. You may need to seek out the services of a career advisor or seek some career counselling. Now decide, how are you going to move forward?

Taking a Job out of your Comfort Zone

In order to grow, we sometimes have to depart completely from our current path and walk the road that is less travelled. The courage for that often comes from the whole lot of introspection and deciding if the path that you’re on suits the vision for your life.

Taking a job out of your comfort zone will help you to:

Find ways to build confidence and self-belief
Find the courage to study and enhance your skills and range of abilities
Meet new people who can add to your professional development
Give you a feeling of fulfilment and a sense of adventure

There are no perfect answers when it comes to the ideal career path. In fact is there even an ideal career path to begin with? You will have to do some serious introspection about who you are, where you are and if you feel fulfilled. If you feel like you have been slipping into a career comfort zone and there is literally no fresh air in your job, it may just be time to try something new.
